Eat Stop Eat - Intermittent Fasting For Weight Loss

Eat Stop Eat is the term coined by Brad Pilon to describe intermittent fasting for weight loss, a profoundly BAD idea.
Intermittent fasting is fasting for short periods of time, usually for 24 hours.
The theory behind intermittent fasting is that while fasting, fat burning enzymes are heightened, and, on a short fast your metabolism can actually be INCREASED, rather than decreased.
Not to be too negative, I'm going to start with what I liked about this book.
Brad clearly shows through several studies that most of the weight loss information we are fed by the dieting industry is actually intended to keep us fat, and keep us buying more products.
The notion of 'needing' to eat six times a day in order to increase our metabolic burn rate is actually total rot and serves the food companies well and us not at all.
Eat Stop Eat: Different Diets Can Achieve The Same Result
Back in the sixties body builders consumed high carb diets and still achieved the fabulous muscles and ripped competition bodies without the need of the high protein diets of today.
Today's body builders are obsessed with the idea that they need high protein diets and multiple meals per day in order to build their muscles.
This is all a fallacy and designed for nothing else but to sell lots of protein powder and keep folks guzzling it down.
Eat Stop Eat: Exercise is what builds muscle, not high protein diets
Provided you are consuming enough food (period!) and doing the TRAINING required to build your body, you can do so on ANY kind of diet.
You do not need to eat according to a schedule and you do not need to use calculus to work out the exact macronutrient ratios of your food.
Eat Stop Eat For Weight Loss
So now we get to what I didn't like about the book, which is basically the whole premise of the book.
Intermittent fasting for weight loss is a profoundly bad idea, as it is simply another calorie restriction diet.
If calorie restriction diets worked, then we'd all be in perfect shape, because this is the one thing that ALL weight loss plans have in common and something that we have ALL tried! Usually, many times.
It doesn't work.
Our bodies are built to survive and can handle fasting very well, but this doesn't mean that we should do it on a weekly basis. Wild animals (who funnily enough are never fat) do not fast or choose to fast unless there is a shortage of food! How come they don't need to use intermittent fasting to keep in shape?
You won't see the monkey in the banana tree saying 'oh crap!, I can't eat any of these bananas today, I'm on the eat stop eat plan and today is fasting Monday!'

98% of all diets fail - these are not good odds.
Yet the moment we have excess fat on us, the dieting industry is the first place we turn.
If you're like me, you've probably spent years on one diet or the other. And yet you DON'T have your ideal body.
It's time for a radical shift in the paradigm about weight loss and for a true understanding of what makes us fat in the first place - hint: top of the list is DIETING!

Following a high carb, low fat raw vegan diet removes the need for intermittent fasting for weight loss.
Weight Loss will happen on its own if you follow a high carb, low fat vegan diet, you don't need to suffer, you don't need to starve.
You also don't need to eat 6 times a day, and this is where the book does make a lot of sense. If you can get enough calories eating twice a day, this is a good thing to do. I prefer three or four meals, but that's just me.
Even Dr Douglas Graham only eats two meals a day.
Eat Stop Eat: Water Only Please!
I am also quite shocked and stunned at Brad's endorsement of caffeine and aspartame via diet sodas while fasting.
Adding in caffeinated drinks just makes you cranky, gives you digestive discomfort and loads your body with toxins, what is the point of this? And aspartame? Good grief!
Just drink water! Pure fresh water!
As far as a weight loss plan goes, Eat Stop Eat is just calorie restriction by another name. And here's what I think about calorie restriction: A Calorie Restriction Diet = The Worst Idea Ever!
