Homemade Shampoo Recipes

When we went 'no poo' we started experimenting with various homemade shampoo recipes on our hair, with varying levels of success.

I have tried baking soda, fresh lemons, a lemon and cucumber shampoothie and a vinegar rinse.

What seemed to work best for me was to use a mix of all of these, depending on what I felt like making at the time!

Vinegar Rinse

A vinegar rinse is the simplest way to go. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into two cups of hot water.

Work this through your wet hair, massage in and then rinse out.

This works really well. The vinegar rinse doesn't strip any of the moisture from the hair, rather it is more of a mild conditioning treatment.

On the negative side if you are dealing with some hair detox and still have some greasiness, the vinegar rinse won't wash that out.

However, you could use this in conjunction with some of the other homemade shampoo recipes in place of conditioner.

Baking Soda

A tablespoon of baking soda mixed with two cups of hot water makes a great homemade shampoo recipe for oily hair. This is great for when you are in the transition stage of becoming shampoo free as there is often quite a lot of build up.

This washes the build up out of your hair and gives a very squeaky clean feeling, similar to shampoo.

It's best to follow a baking soda wash with a vinegar rinse. The baking soda by itself is quite drying on the hair and the vinegar rinse helps to balance that out.

Once you're through the transition stages and don't have any oiliness to wash out, you may find this too drying.

Fresh Lemons

I have used fresh lemons a good few times and found them very effective as a homemade hair shampoo.

Simply cut a lemon in half and squeeze the lemon halves directly onto your scalp and work the lemon through your hair well, and then rinse out thoroughly.

Again, this is best when you have some oiliness at the roots, and can be a little drying if you don't.

Lemon and Cucumber Shampoothie

homemade hair shampoo This is Jaye's favorite and the only thing he uses on his hair. He also uses this as a shaving cream.

Blend one fresh peeled lemon with one peeled cucumber in the blender. Pour out into a jug and then mix into your hair, massaging well, rinse thoroughly.

This is GREAT! The cucumber acts as a conditioning agent, and the lemon as a cleansing agent, so the two together are like a two in one homemade hair shampoo!

If your hair is a little dry, use more cucumber. If it is a little oily, use more lemon. The two together equal magic!

The ONLY negative to this, is that it can be difficult to wash it out properly. The tiny flakes of lemon can get stuck in your hair and if your hair is dark, it might look a little like dandruff.

The best thing is to fully dry your hair before leaving the house and make sure that you have got rid of all the flakes.

Jaye has the best hair that he has ever had and though he struggled with dry scalp for years, this cleared up rapidly using this homemade shampoo recipe.

no shampoo hair Sea Water

While this isn't a homemade shampoo recipe, it is nevertheless a great way to give yourself a hair treatment once the transition to natural shampoo free hair has taken place. Just go and swim in the sea! It feels so wonderful on your hair!

So all you need to try these homemade shampoo recipes is some apple cider vinegar, lemons, cucumbers and baking soda. Simple yet effective. And if all else fails, just go to the beach.
