For the month of March 2009, I did a 30 day raw food diet trial of eating no overt fats at all. I wanted to see what the results would be in terms of how I looked and felt.
The results were more than I expected!
I lost a little weight, I felt FANTASTIC at times and pretty down at other times, I questioned whether I really wanted to be raw, and most importantly I learned a LOT of lessons about what is an optimal way of living during this raw food diet trial.
By being objective and tracking everything as I went, I learned a lot of lessons and a lot about what NOT to do! I started off the trial undereating, undersleeping and not drinking enough water. I gradually learned during the course of the trial that these practices were just not going to be sustainable.
I also suffered a lot of cravings, and symptoms that I attributed to detox and the lack of fat, but when I look at the posts now with the benefit of hindsight, I can see that these symptoms were more due to not eating enough, not drinking enough water and not sleeping enough as mentioned above. It takes a while to learn how to do the raw food diet the 'right' way, sometimes it takes years of trial and error. And this raw food diet trial details some of my learning curve.
You have to eat ENOUGH to beat cravings!
We don't have to count calories or force in food when it isn't wanted, but hunger and cravings are very obvious indicators that we need to eat MORE.
You have to drink enough water, EVEN when the food you're eating is mostly water!
I waited until I was very thirsty to drink water, thinking I was getting plenty of water from my food. This is NOT true. While a raw foods diet provides much more water than any other diet, you STILL need to drink water!
These are all classic 'newbie' mistakes.
This is my 'no fat' raw food diet trial in its entirety, you may learn a few interesting things, I certainly did!

Rules For the Raw Food Diet Trial
For these 30 days the rules are as follows: I can eat as much as I want of all non fatty fruits and vegetables. I will record, weigh and measure everything I eat, so that I can input the figures onto fitday or nutridiary.
At the end of each day I will do a blog post which details my total calories, grams of fat, fiber, protein and carbohydrates as well as listing my weight and any other relevant information. I will not be monitoring my calorie consumption for the purposes of restricting at all, I will just eat according to hunger.
I want to see how much weight can be lost and how much I can shape up by cutting ONLY fat out of my diet, whilst continuing to eat a 100% raw foods diet, as I have been for a couple of months already.
So here are some photos of me in my bikini. At the end of this raw food diet trial I will post them up in the same poses so we can compare. I can't wait to compare myself 30 days from now and I am really excited to see what happens!
So today went very well.
I am still working in an office until the end of the month, after which I will be working full time on my own projects. So in the meantime, I have to pack food for work.
This morning I made two liters of green smoothie and chopped up half a watermelon and took that along to work with me in a cooler bag.
I drank one liter when I got to work and the other at around 12:30. I had the watermelon (all 1250g of it) at about 3:30 this afternoon.
My energy levels were very stable all through the day and I felt just great.
My stomach wasn't completely recovered from the weekend though and was making some pretty loud and embarrassing noises. On Friday I ate some oil drenched sundried tomatoes, olives and artichokes and my body reacted to the oil and salt combination with extreme disgust.
I ate the oily salt combo at lunchtime Friday and then didn't manage to eat again until Saturday as I was so sick. The salt gave me such a bad hangover too, a full on case of dehydration.
I recently heard something pretty funny, that if you need to drink water after a meal, you should clutch your throat and run around shouting 'I've Been Poisoned' because that's exactly what has happened.
When I got home at 6:30pm I made a smoothie with 360g banana, 4x dates and 110g blueberries.
That was supposed to be it for the night, but when Jaye got home he got creative and made this most delicious raw dessert! He blended dates with some freshly squeezed orange juice and cocoa powder. Then he spooned in two pomegranates into the chocolate mousse mix. The result is a little bit of heaven! It is dark chocolate orange mousse! Absolutely fantastic!
I'll post the full recipe and instructions on the Fruit Dessert Recipes page, but not tonight, its nearly bedtime.
Raw Food Diet Trial - Conclusions
So, totals for the day! The purpose of this raw food diet trial is not to count or restrict calories in any way, but rather just to see what happens with no fats at all.
