Raw Food Diet - 30 Day 'No Fat' Trial - Day 15

15 March 2009

And I'm halfway through my raw food diet 'no fat' trial! Yay!

Weight

Weight is up slightly this morning to 123.2 bringing my total weight loss for this raw food diet trial to 1.8 pounds.

PMS

Yip, I'm pmsing pretty bad. Jokes, actually it's not bad. I felt a little irritable and anxious this morning and when I got to work I had a ton of urgent tasks and things going wrong and that didn't help with either.

Overall I have found my emotions to be very stable. I am less joyful and full of love and good cheer than I was at the beginning of this raw food diet trial and before the trial even started, and I think that is mainly to do with detox.

I went to bed early last night (9:30pm) but still woke up this morning feeling like I needed at least 5 hours more.

Addiction and Emotional Detoxification on a Raw Food Diet

In the same way that knowing alcohol is going to give you a hangover doesn't stop you drinking when you want to get blotto, knowing that cooked food is more than likely going to make me sick, or at the very least I will regret it, is not stopping me from wanting it.

It's almost like I want that heavy, numbed, foggy feeling. It's like this feeling of lightness and being totally in tune with my emotions and myself is a little much. There is definitely an emotional detox that happens for most people when they switch from cooked foods to a raw food diet and especially on the switch to a low fat raw food diet.

As it takes so much energy to digest certain foods, the body literally cannot process strong emotions and heavy foods at the same time, so the heavy food wins out, and we are numbed from our true feelings. Even following a vegan raw food diet if you eat a large amount of dried fruits and nuts, that's a very heavy load for your digestion and has the same effect.

That is why in a crisis certain people can't stop eating while others can't eat at all. I am one of the 'can't stop eating' types. Back in the day when I did drugs and drank alcohol regularly than I would do that instead.

I feel that I've dealt with most things in my life and definitely come to terms with everything past and present, however, the stripped away feeling that I have now is a little uncomfortable, and I crave that blotto feeling. I want to eat a heavy meal and have that tired, drugged, heavy numbness come down over me like a blanket.

There is obviously some emotional detoxing that I need to do, as I am finding myself feeling inexplicably sad at odd moments. It's a sadness that radiates from my soul and seems to inhabit every cell of my body. I don't even know what it's for! But without any numbing options available, I have to just feel it, and just let it move through me and on.

I find that in our society we are so uncomfortable with sadness, in ourselves or others and we immediately try and drug it away. 'Don't cry, have some (milk and sugar laden) tea!'

This stripped away vulnerability to strong feelings has a fabulous counterpart, and that is being in touch with the joy of living. You can feel true happiness and euphoria on a raw food diet like never before. There is nothing standing between you and your positive emotions. It also puts you so in touch with your intuition that your consciousness can't help but move up a couple of levels.

I definitely noticed an upwards shift in my consciousness after going vegan and I am definitely noticing it again now, after going on the raw food diet. I have felt moments of such connection to everyone around me, and such love for all living creatures. It seems that I am that much quicker to see where someone else is coming from and empathize too. I just seem to have a flash of intuition and I can immediately see their point of view.

This is definitely helpful in terms of resolving conflict, as I don't tend to jump onto my high horse as fast, I rather see things from the other side first, and then incorporate that empathy into my response.

Raw Food Diet Trial: Cravings

The cravings are raging and Jaye says it's the same thing with him. Apparently as things are cleared out of your system, they are once again 'in' your system, making you crave more of them. So as salt and spices and condiments (also called excitotoxins as they stimulate and 'excite' the nervous system) get cleared out of your body, it is once again in your bloodstream, only this time it's on its way out. However, the fact that it is there makes you want more, badly.

I just spoke to my sister who has recently cut down the fats in her diet, and she says it has awoken the beast and she is now in a state of perpetual craving. She went on a raw food diet a few weeks after me and at first was eating avocado, olives and oil soaked sundried tomatoes daily, but she has cut that down now and so the cravings begin.

No Poo

Today was the first day of foregoing the shampoo, and by the looks of my hair today, it will need a wash tomorrow! So it will be strange to ignore that impulse and just rinse with water instead. I would be very happy to ditch the shampoo long term, as my hair is very dry on the ends.

At one stage I had greasy roots but that was at a time that I was eating a very high fat diet. That should have been a massive sign to me that something was off, having perfectly normal roots suddenly turning greasy! It was awful. I had to try a range of different 'balancing' shampoos that cost a bomb and helped not a bit. It was only when I cut down on fats that the problem disappeared.

So now I have normal roots and dry ends. If my roots turn greasy from not washing I'll squeeze a lemon on them.

Mono Island

A lot of 80/10/10 raw food diet followers go to Mono Island for ten days. This means you eat one type of fruit for ten or more days. The best fruit is usually bananas as they are always in season, cheap, filling and relatively high calorie.

The purpose of Mono Island is to fast track detoxification even further. As there is just ONE type of fruit going into your body, your body digests and assimilates it even faster, leaving even more energy available for detoxification. Since you are still getting plenty of nutrients and calories (if you eat enough) then you can continue and even surpass your previous exercise levels, and for a lot of people it is more convenient than a water fast, as you can do it anytime and are not limiting your energy, so can still work, exercise etc.

I am thinking of going to Banana Island for ten days at some point, and then maybe follow that with 10 days on watermelon island! I think I would be so frikken healthy at the end of that!!! But let me not get ahead of myself, and just finish this raw food diet trial first!

Digestion

I was thinking this morning, that I don't even notice my digestion anymore. At the beginning of this raw food diet trial my stomach was going crazy, making enormous bloep bloep bloep noises all the time. Now it is completely silent and I don't even know I have a stomach. It is all working silently and happily away in the background.

Raw Food Diet Trial: Food

I had a banana, spinach and blueberry smoothie for breakfast, containing 200g Spinach, 4x bananas (414g) and 115g Blueberries. For lunch I had a date and celery salad (287g celery and 10x dates). For a snack I had 6x medium oranges. They were not very nice. Very disappointing since we paid a fortune for them at the Organic shop. They had probably sat on the shelf for weeks because no one could afford to buy them! That is certainly what they tasted like.

By the way I never give the weight of the oranges because I don't weigh them, as that would involve peeling them first and it is just too much work. So I just do the estimate weight on fitday.com for a medium orange instead of inputting the weight in grams.

For dinner I had a banana and date smoothie with 6x bananas (680g) and 5x dates. After dinner I was still hungry, so Jaye made a soup with bell peppers, tomatoes and oranges and he chopped up celery and cucumber as 'croutons'. It was amazingly filling and delicious.

After the Raw Food Diet Trial

I am definitely going to have a day where I eat some cooked food at the end of this raw food diet trial. I have decided. It will be like an experiment. I want to eat it with full awareness of how it feels in my body and tastes in my mouth. It will undoubtedly kick my butt and make me wish I could turn back the clock but I'm going to do it anyway.

It's on. I plan to go right back to 100% raw vegan afterward. The thought of eating some vegetarian sushi and some noodles is keeping me sane at this moment as the cravings rage!

My totals for today were as follows: Calories 2155, Fat 8.8g, Carbohydrates 537.5, Dietary Fiber 88.8g, Protein 40.9g, Sodium 492.4mg.

Percentage Totals: Carbohydrates 90%, Protein 6%, Fat 4%
